Welcome to Hamilton Kendo Club

What is Kendo?..

Picture
Kendo (way of the sword) is a traditional Japanese martial art which descended from Kenjutsu.  Schools of Kenjutsu were proliferated by the samurai in the Edo Period (16th century). The use of bamboo swords  and protective armour was created during the Shotoku Era (1711-1715). Today, kendo is widely practiced within Japan and many other nations. Canada is a top-ranked kendo country.

To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo is a life-long journey. The kendoka (person who practices) strengthens their spirit, mind and body through the principles of swordsmanship and rigorous training. Kendo follows the code of Bushido based in respect and honour. In kendo the spirit, the sword and the body move as one.

The Purpose of Kendo
To mold the mind and body.
To cultivate a vigorous spirit,
And through correct and rigid training,
To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo.
To hold in esteem human courtesy and honor.
To associate with others with sincerity.
And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself.
Thus will one be able:
To love one’s country and society;
To contribute to the development of culture;
And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.
